Discover - find (something or someone) unexpectedly or in the course of a search
What do you search for? Is it God? Community? Opportunity? A new horizon? An exciting adventure?
Our Discovery DTS is designed to be an adventure with God. While we explore Vancouver Island, we discover God's character through dynamic lectures and community living. Looking to travel? We pursue people and travel overseas on a mission trip that we call ‘Outreach’, proclaiming God's truth and love to those that have not heard it before.
But that is still broad, isn’t it. Let’s get specific
What is Lecture like?
That is a good question… how to answer you…
In verbs:
Applying, packing, flying, arriving, finding your room, sleeping, meeting new people.
Exploring a new home, learning new customs, speaking your first or second language, finding new roommates and friends.
Studying, learning, hearing, pondering, meditating, processing, trying it out.
Hiking, Kayaking, Cave exploring, Swimming, Camping
Praying, journaling, worshiping, talking with God, hearing him talk to you!
Practicing - evangelism, worship leading, prayer walks, mercy ministries (we practice because there is no end of these things only getting better)
In Nouns:
New house, new city, new climate, new people, new roommates, new leaders, new schedule
Class, powerpoint, worship times, Intercession, prayer for each other.
One-on-one mentoring, coaching, small groups, worship leading, work duties.
Prayer walks, university ministry, evangelism on the streets, strangers to meet and pray for.
Outreach prep, fundraising, sharing in churches.
All of this and more is packed into 3 months of lecture that puts the ‘Discipleship’ in ‘Discipleship Training School.
What is Outreach like?
That is a big Question: let me try…
In Verbs…
Packing bags, walking streets, flying in planes, leaving home, coming to someplace new.
Changing clothes and your heart, growing as a person, sleeping on floors, not sleeping (the roasters are too loud).
Fighting (heat stroke, nausea, and sometimes each other), trying to forgive (after you fight).
Failing at what you thought outreach was about, trying again. Succeeding because God came through.
Preaching to people, guessing if they understood you, praying that they did, worshiping cause they did and God touched their hearts.
Trying again the next day.
Talking to your team and leaders, making friends with locals, hearing stories of a life you never knew existed.
Seeing God move through all your efforts every day in small and big ways.
In Nouns…
Evangelism on the streets. Intercession times. Baptisms. Holy Spirit showing up!
Bible studying times. Mountain ministry. Craft and games with kids time.
Food Distribution. House visits to the needy. People are invited to your house. Prayer times at mosques. Prayer for healing. Salvations. Baptism. New local Friends.
Down times. Debrief time. Goodbyes.
Now you might have a little idea of what it’s like. But nothing I say will fully prepare you. That is where your faith comes in. That’s where you have to trust God; that He told you to go.
Because though it will never be all that you expect it to be, it will be the experience of a lifetime, marking God’s presence in your life for the rest of your life.
That doesn’t mean that it will be easy or fun all the time, but it does mean that it will be GOOD. Amazing and fun, grounding and inspiring, DTS can be a time where God plants the seed in your heart for missions and to see the kingdom of God come to the earth.
That is our prayer; and one that we, as staff have seen answered again and again. — God Changes lives and He uses DTS to do it.
So… What do you search for? Is it God? Community? Opportunity? A new horizon? An exciting adventure?
Then Welcome to Discovery DTS!
